(066) Development of Sex Education and Violence Prevention Curriculum for Adolescents

Abstract Introduction Controversy surrounding sex education for youth has led to increased clinical content in these curricula, emphasizing health implications of sexually transmitted infections and pregnancy prevention methods while failing acknowledge nuanced areas such as pleasure or masturbation. The increasingly medicalized approach high school students represents a missed opportunity provide with broader insight into topics that surround sexual behaviors. Objective purpose our project was develop an inclusive, comprehensive interpersonal violence curriculum. Methods A curriculum designed the following learning objectives: 1) help identify their beliefs societal influences, 2) normalize exploration pleasure, 3) address safe partner engagement. first section focuses on differentiation between gender sexuality. Students are then encouraged consider how identities have been influenced by purity culture deems sexuality permissible only within context cis-gendered, heterosexual married couple. second activity validates individuals’ preferences normalizes pursuit personal through discussion conversation is expanded tools partnered including communication, consent, infection methods. final addresses relationships outside strictly interactions provides information about healthy relationships, behaviors concerning intimate violence, intervention techniques both members bystanders. Results pilot version delivered group attending summer program aspiring healthcare professionals (n=13). post-intervention survey developed assess students’ self-reported change knowledge scale from one (no improvement) five (improved lot). Among who completed evaluation (n=6), average response 3.67 topics, 3.83 prevention, 4.50 recognition intervention. Conclusions For future iterations curriculum, pre-assessment surveys will be distributed measure familiarity gender, sexuality, contraception, relationships; thus, allowing customized based individual population needs.
